The Habitat Island at Exploration Green is ready to plant! Native trees and wetlands on the island, situated in Exploration Green’s first lake, will create a refuge for migratory birds and waterbirds. Exploration Green Conservancy and project partners, including TCWP, are redeveloping the former Clear Lake City golf course into a state of the art stormwater detention and recreation area.
Planting will take place over two Saturdays. The tree planting, led by Trees for Houston, will take place on Saturday, November 18. The wetland planting, led by the Texas Community Watershed Partners/Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, is Saturday, November 25. If rain dates are needed, planting will take place the following Saturday: Nov 25 for trees, and Dec 2 for wetlands.
Registration for the events is at https://explorationgreen.eventbrite.com/
Access to the island itself will be by boat, and will be limited to 50 people. However, there will be volunteer activities on shore as well. Children with a parent present are welcome to do work onshore. Volunteers should wear clothes and shoes that can get wet and muddy. Tools will be provided. We will keep going until all the plants are in the ground! For more information, contact mcedwards@tamu.edu.
There is no charge for this community event, but registration is requested. See you soon at Exploration Green!
